Cook Islands: Atiu, Aitutaki and Mitiaro
7 nights - 3 islands
Atiu Island lies 187 kilometers northeast of Rarotonga.
The villages are in the centre of the island on a flat topped plateau leaving the surrounding makatea (coral reef) and beaches untouched and almost unvisited except by those seeking a beautiful, quiet, and secluded spot. There are some 28 coral sand beaches, many of which are inaccessible and all are very secluded. The grottos, which are pools under the cliff and linked to the sea, are worth a visit. Taungaroro is Atiu's best beach with beautiful white sand and swimming is possible at high tide. The coral reef is rugged, bush clad and riddled with caves. Be sure and bring reef shoes or tennis shoes for walking on the reef......
Cook Islands: Mitiaro and Mauke
Mitiaro Island lies 229 kilometers northeast of Rarotonga.
It is considered to be the friendliest island of all the Cook Islands. Perhaps it is because you are accommodated in homes belonging to local residents that induces friendships with the local population or because of the small close knit community. Whatever the reason you will find Mitiaro a very friendly island and will immediately begin to make new friends. The interior of the island is largely swampy and there is a brackish lake in the centre which are found the indigenous Mitiaro eel regarded as a great delicacy in the Cook Islands. There are a few patches of fertile soil in which the people grow bananas which form the principal source of carbohydrates in the Mitiaro diet.
The island is only 11 miles in circumference which can casually be walked in 3 hours. Be sure to pack sturdy walking shoes as the makatea can be very rough. There are many caves to explore on the island. Don't miss a visit to the Vai Naure Cave with its fern grotto and fresh water pool. Swimming in the cave is one of the favorite pastimes of the locals. It is easy to make friends among the local fishermen and go out with them in their outriggers. At low tide many people fish from the edge of the reef with long bamboo poles.
Cook Islands: Mangaia, Aitutaki, Atiu and Mauke
9 nights - 4 islands
Mangaia Island lies 177 kilometers southeast of Rarotonga and is the southernmost of the Cook Islands.
The island has a raised coral reef forming a 60 meter high ring around the island. There are no sandy beaches due to the makatea and swimming in the lagoon is limited due to the closeness of the reef, however, there are several rock pools which provide good swimming at high tide. The attraction of Mangaia is its natural scenery, dramatic caves and interesting hiking treks.
The island is also the home of the indigenous Mangaian Kingfisher bird. Fishing is a popular activity with the locals and visitors are oftentimes invited to join the daily fishing excursions.
Oneroa is the main village on Mangaia and has several shops, a general store, post office, and sports field. The village has two levels with many homes, the school and the Mangaia Lodge located on the top of the makatea cliff while most businesses are located at sea level. There is a road that connects the two levels and also there are steps that are carved into the makatea for those who are fit enough for the steep climb. Watching the school children in the afternoon making their way from the top of the cliff to the village centre makes for a marvelous photographic opportunity.
