The Zuiderzee is irrevocably linked to the period in Dutch history called the Golden Age: the period in the 17th century when Holland was a powerful seafaring and trading nation.
Dotted around the Zuiderzee are towns whose names were household words in both hemispheres: Monnickendam, Hoorn, Vollenhove, Harderwijk and of course Amsterdam at the centre of the web, all bearing witness to their rich pasts. On Monday you can visit the Zuiderzee museum in Enkhuizen. This open-air museum makes you feel you are at the end of the 18th century. Crafts typical of the time are practised, and costumes can be admired (entrance not included in the price).

The peace, the nature and the Race of Races (the Eleven Cities Tour) have made Friesland extremely popular with skaters but certainly also with cyclists. The Eleven Cities Tour owes its name to two men who decided in the winter of 1808 to skate past eleven towns in one day, a total of 230 kilometers. To prove they had done it, they obtained the signatures of the owners of cafés or hotels in every town. The first official Eleven Cities Tour was held in 1909.

Bike tours in Germany
A bike tour along the Mosel is not only beautiful for the wine fanciers. The Mosel with its numerous picturesque bends, vineyards, romantic wineries, medieval castles and historic cities belongs to one of the most various and most beautiful river valleys of Europe. This wine-growing area profits from the good climate. The inhabitants from the 3 countries France, Germany and Luxemburg began to cooperate a long time ago in order to establish the shipping traffic along the Mosel and to demonstrate the rest of the world to live together more peaceful. Hospitality and frankness can still be found in this area. The bike tour along the Mosel mainly leads you along the riverbank, but sometimes you have to pass a few gradients in the slightly hilly areas. If there is traffic, it's just very few. The whole tour leads you on plain and prepared or unprepared paths or side roads. Numerous inns, mostly built in framework-style or of stone, allow relaxing and offer regional specialities and the light wine.
