St. Vincent and the Grenadines: Vermont Nature Trail Tour
This tour takes you along the Leeward Highway passing through small villages. As we approach the Buccament Valley, we make an inland turn and drive for 2 miles through more small villages, capturing some cultural and historical events. Another 1.5 miles on rugged road brings us to The Nature Trail site.
The Vermont Nature Trail offers an opportunity to explore the St. Vincent Parrot Reserve. The Reserve conserves 10,870 acres of forest, set aside in 1987 to help preserve the endemic St. Vincent Parrot (Amazona guildingii) and its rain forest habitat. This Reserve provides a superb area for hiking and bird watching. There are two trails: The Parrot Lookout Trail, 1.75 miles and The River Trail, .75 miles, which offer the unique opportunity to walk through cultivated fields, forest plantation, and rainforest with many species of wildlife.
St. Vincent and the Grenadines: La Soufriere Volcano Trail
Experience a fabulous opportunity to capture the volcanic nature of our island by taking a tour to La Soufriere, one of the most studied volcanoes in the world, which rises to a peak of 4048 ft. above sea level.
This tour takes you along the picturesque Windward coast of St. Vincent. The coastal highway runs alongside the Atlantic Ocean passing through banana, coconut and arrowroot plantations, and travels through the Byera Tunnel, which was built in 1813 to open the Carib lands to settlement.
The road to La Soufriere leaves the coastal highway at Rabacca and travels through the Orange Hill banana and coconut plantation to where the foot trail begins a 2.5 hour exhilarating and challenging hike with resting points at the river bed and Jacobs Well. The foot trail leads you through a canopy of bamboo ridges, lowland forest with patches of cultivation and then into tropical forest with a profusion of tree ferns, tall trees festooned with bromeliads, lianas and moist shade dappled with sunlight. You emerge from the shade into a zone of vegetation stunted by altitude, breeze and frequent cloud cover and continue to an alpine-like zone before the last stretch of scree to the crater itself. The view is breathtaking and well worth the hike. Lunch is eaten at the top of the volcano while enjoying the panoramic view. The journey down is less challenging and takes about 1.5 hours.
St. Vincent and the Grenadines: Dark View Falls
Escape and enjoy our twin falls, an experience uncommon for one site.
This tour takes you on the Leeward Highway out of Kingstown passing the Botanic Gardens and over the ridge overlooking Kingstown and Camden Park Bay. Drive through exotic coves and fishing villages, like the village of Layou where the Ruthland Vale Sugar Works gives you a good idea of just how profitable sugar was during the early history of the country.
As is evident in the name of towns and villages (Troumaca, Petit Bordel and Chateaubelair), the flavour of the French is still here as a reminder of historic times. Home of Dark View Falls, Chateaubelair lies at the southern foot of the volcano. The coast here is rugged and photogenic with dramatic hill and mountain outlines, cliffs and beach.
