Trekking & Walking
St. Helena Island : Walking and Hiking
There's no better way to explore the island than on foot; there are just so many excellent walks and hikes in such a small place! We have walks for everyone; walks that are challenging both in distance, stamina and mind and there are also moderate and easy walks that everyone can enjoy. Our walks can take you to dramatic coastal locations to lush pastures and hills, and valleys.
The St Helena Nature Conservation Group (SNCG) has devised Post Box Walks covering some of the most scenic and remote areas of the island.
These walks are rated on a Difficulty scale out of 10 and it is strongly recommended that walks with a rating of 5 or above, you are accompanied by someone who knows the route. At the summit of each walk is a Post Box containing an ink stamp and a 'Visitor's Book'. The Post Box Walks booklets are on sale at the Tourist Office.
For a variety of easy to moderate walks, pick up our ‘Explore on Foot' leaflet (on sale at the Tourist Office) and our Plantation Forest Nature Trails and Hardings and Cason's Nature trails leaflets.

About Usambara Moutains
Usambara Mountains are situated in the North Eastern part of Tanzania between Mount Kilimanjaro and the Indian Ocean. The mountains rise up steeply from the surrounding plains and can only be entered via a few roads. The only tortuous tarmac road in the area winds along a small river to Soni and Lushoto the largest towns in the area. Because of its pleasant climate the mountains were favored by the Germans and the English during colonial times as this is evidenced by the numerous historic buildings from the past. From a distance the mountains are a colorful mosaic. On the fertile slopes around Soni and Lushoto, farmers cultivate small plots but further away from the large town. Areas are still covered by the dense tropical forests.
The viewpoints on the Southern and Western side of the Usambara Mountains are well known for the spectacular views of the Mkomazi and Handeni plains, Kilimanjaro can be seen on the horizon, and at the end of the day the sunset turns the area into tremendous palled of unforgettable colours.
Tanzania : Mountain Kitulo Hiking
Visit Kitulo National Park which known as Bustani ya Mungu (God's Garden) and elsewhere as the Serengeti of Flowers and one of the great floral spectacles of the world'.
About Kitulo Mountain
Known locally as Bustani ya Mungu (God's Garden) and elsewhere as the Serengeti of Flowers, the Kitulo Plateau is unique. Comprising 273 km2 of Afromontane and Afroalpine grassland, the plateau has long been heralded as a botanists' paradise, containing great numbers of endemic flowering plants, including terrestrial orchids. Perched above 2,600m (8,528ft) between the Kipengere Range and the Poroto and Livingstone Mountains, Kitulo represents the largest and most important plateau grassland community in Tanzania.
Kitulo is floristically rich, with 350 species of vascular plants documented to date, including 45 species of terrestrial orchid. Many of the species are of restricted distribution. Some 31 species are Tanzanian endemics, 16 are endemic to Kitulo/Kipengere and 10 are restricted to Kitulo/Poroto. At least three species are endemic to the plateau itself and two more are known only from the plateau and adjoining forests. It is the abundance of plants in the wet season, however, that immediately impresses and the phenomenon has been described as 'one of the great floral spectacles of the world'. The plateau is also home to important animal species including national and regional endemics. Breeding colonies of Blue Swallow (Hirundo atrocaerulea) and Denham's Bustard (Neotis denhami), as well as species such as Lesser Kestrel (Falco naumanni), Pallid Harrier (Circus macrourus), Njombe Cisticola (Cisticola njombe), and Kipengere Seedeater (Serinus melanochrous), contribute to the plateau being an Important Bird Area (IBA 73).

Classic Safari (Malawi & Zambia)
15 or 22 days
The first Europeans to arrive in Malawi and Zambia were Portuguese explorers who reached the interior from the East Coast. However, the most famous visitor was David Livingstone, whose exploration heralded the arrival of Europeans in a way, which was to change the nature of the region forever. The establishment of missions to promote the spread of Christianity and the abolition of slavery soon followed. We tread in the footsteps of those early pioneers through a land of spectacular scenery, unparalleled hospitality and unique wildlife. Malawi, lying within the tropics at the southern end of the Great Rift Valley, is affectionately referred to as ‘The warm heart of Africa'; not only is the climate warm, but Malawians really are among the friendliest people you could hope to meet.
Anyone who enjoys scenic beauty will find the country richly endowed, from forested reserves, National Parks and broad highlands to the peaceful shores of Lake Malawi. In contrast Eastern Zambia offers the chance to explore one of the best wildlife areas in Africa. Luangwa National Park contains one of the largest concentrations of elephant, as well as supporting a wealth of other species and habitat. This journey, rich in contrast and adventure, is full of unforgettable experiences. You can even continue your trip to southern Malawi to take in the fabulous game parks there as well as the unique upland areas such as Mount Mulanje and the Zomba plateau.
